00 — Overview

What the LM2596 does

The LM2596 is a 150-kHz, 3-A step-down voltage regulator available in fixed 3.3-V, 5-V, and 12-V versions or with an adjustable output from 1.2-V to 37-V. It operates with an input voltage up to 40 V and requires only four external components. The device features a 150-kHz fixed-frequency internal oscillator, TTL shutdown capability, and low power standby mode consuming typically 80 μA. It provides excellent line and load regulation with thermal shutdown and current-limit protection. These regulators are typically used in appliances, grid infrastructure, and home theater systems to drive high-current loads efficiently while allowing smaller filter components due to the higher switching frequency.
